Writing

at St Wilfrid's CE Primary School

Structure of our Writing Curriculum and Sessions

Our writing curriculum is based on a text- based approach, where the children’s writing is inspired by a variety of high-quality texts. Our approach is inspired by One Education’s writing model which promotes:

  1. Text-based approaches to writing.
  2. Hooking children into writing.
  3. Providing a real audience and purpose.
  4. Promoting the editing process.
  5. Publishing.
  6. Writing for pleasure.

At the start of each half term, children are introduced to their new text in an engaging manner (steps 1 and 2). Throughout the term, the text is used to engage, guide and inspire the children to write for different audiences and purposes (step 3: see writing curriculum genre coverage and writing opportunities). Children are encouraged to edit and improve their writing (step 4 and 5) in writing sessions and through our assessment policy. Throughout the process, the children develop a love for writing through engagement in the text, the writing and the purpose. They become enthusiastic writers (step 6).

We entwine this with use of many of The Literacy Company units. We cover many of the genres encouraged by The Literacy Company’s Pathways to Write as staff have received this training, some of the units are used throughout our curriculum and staff have adopted the process of incorporating GPS skills into their writing. EYFS also use this text-based approach to teach set writing skills from the EYFS curriculum which is specified in their writing outcomes. Through the text based approach, the following genres of writing are explored over the odd/even cycle:
