Geography

at St Wilfrid's CE Primary School

We intend for our children to explore and develop their understanding of the social, environmental and economic aspects of place, whilst considering their own role on a local, national and global scale. We want children to always have a sense of where they live, both through studying aspects of Manchester, North West England and the UK and through comparing their environment to other countries and continents around the world. Additionally, we want children to become skilled geographers and to be able to show skills in reading and creating maps, presenting data on their local area as well as using all compass points and grid references to locate and compare places. Our children’s geographical reference points start off small in the Early Years and then expand and grow as they develop through the key stages to include far away continents and countries. This way of building up children’s knowledge is influenced by our school’s Christian vision from the Parable of the Mustard Seed (Mark 4: 30-32) where the smallest beginnings grow and flourish to ambitious end points. By the time they leave us, we want our children to have acquired an understanding of their place in the world and an appreciation of the diversity of its countries and people.
